Four new Clean Marinas

Fontana Village Marina on Fontana Reservoir, MarineMax on Chickamauga Reservoir, and Kenlake Marina and Hester’s Resort & Marina on Kentucky Reservoir are the latest facilities to receive TVA Clean Marina certification. They join a growing list of marinas who have pledged to do their part to keep the Tennessee Valley’s waterways free of harmful chemicals, excess nutrients, and debris.

 

“A total of 76 Valley marinas have been certified to date,” said Buff Crosby, Senior Manager of Environmental Stewardship at TVA. “Certified marinas must meet stringent standards designed to reduce water pollution, which entitles them to fly the Clean Marina flag signifying their commitment to good stewardship.”

 

Pollution-prevention standards cover sewage disposal; fuel management; vessel maintenance and repair; solid, liquid, and hazardous waste disposal; stormwater management; erosion control; and public education.

 

“Clean Marinas demonstrate their commitment to clean water by their actions,” said Crosby. “They understand that environmental responsibility is good business because it protects the resource that provides their livelihood.”

Boaters can make a difference in the health of their reservoir by encouraging their local marina to get involved in the program, says Crosby. “Inquiries from customers can sometimes make a real difference when it comes to encouraging marinas to begin working toward certification. Let the folks who manage your marina know that protecting Valley waterways for the next generation of boaters is important to you.”
