Completion of Fort Loudoun
Fort Loudoun was the first Anglo settlement west of the Alleghenies. It was completed in July of 1757, only to be surrendered to the Cherokees in August of 1760. Captain Demere surrendered under condition that his troops be allowed to retreat unimpeded. On August 10, the garrison was massacred by Indians while retreating to Fort Prince George in South Carolina.
